American Economics More Then Hot Dogs and Shoes.Posted by Portrait | of a New America (los angeles, United States) on 29 April 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. The Inter-American Development Bank released a study that sited: 3.2million Latinos stopped sending money to back to their homeland, and families. In California, $14.6B was sent during 2007. Seems times are tight for Migrant-Americans, the family, and innocent non-document children. Some say there is increased pressure on employers to document the hiring status of employees. Still, I often wonder how people can make a living in America without the skills of education, and the ability to speak and be understood. How many $7.00 shoes must one store owner sell to pay $6,500 a month in rent? The owner of this store is from Turkey; what was a great business 5years ago has turned into a struggling fight to keep the doors open. Los Angeles St, is known for cheap everything. Its has been the Latino consumer hub for deals, for many years. Yet, now new folks are moving into the area. Downtown LA is in the middle of change; new lofts and the big national brands are interested in the new regional upscale consumers. Now more so then ever, New-American Migrants will fall into the cracks of marginalized poverty. Portrait | of A New America is a simple snapshot of this nation; our concerns, and hopes for a better future. This work does not seek to answer questions regarding the complex changes; the vision is to present a range of topics that are relational to life in America: 2008.
